Piriformis-meet my foam roller. I should have introduced you guys a long time ago. My bad. Please forgive me.
It started with right sided low back pain a couple weeks ago. Honestly, I thought we needed a new mattress because it was the worst in the morning. It was so bad that I couldn’t bend down. Then, a couple days ago, I started having some pain in the back of the hip joint. I still wasn’t sure what it was or where it was from.
Yesterday, it hit me like a bolt of lightning. My piriformis! I have a spot on my right buttock that is really tender and hurts if I try to bend over or cross my right leg over my left.
Coincidentally, I was scrolling facebook yesterday and came across this video that Runner’s World posted. I checked out some of the stretches that are supposed to help with piriformis syndrome and that is what I have been religiously doing. And what I will continue to do. I’m going to clam-shelling and foam rolling my way through the Super Bowl tonight.
As I was thinking about how this happened, I realized that I can only blame my old treadmill. It has been slowly dying over the past couple of months. The worse it performed, the more I had to change my gait in order to not fall off. I ended up shortening my stride pretty significantly. By doing that, I ended up with even tighter hamstrings and my glutes weren’t doing the work that they should have been doing. And now I’m paying for it. Grrr!
Has anyone else ever dealt with piriformis issues? What did you do? How long is the recovery time? Any advice?
