Reflections and Resolutions

Sorry this post is a little late.  I have been spending the first few day of 2016 dealing with the consequences of someone else’s poor decision.

That is my car.  Someone decided to make a left hand turn right in front of me.  Fortunately, everyone is ok-I had the whole family in the car.  Unfortunately, dealing with the insurance companies is making me want to beat my head against the wall.

back to the regularly scheduled post………

2015 was a year that just flew by!  It seems that the older I get the faster time goes by.  I’m sure my parents told me this when I was younger, but I was too cool to care.  I care now.  I see my kids growing up and getting much more independent.  Jaden just turned 10 a few days ago!

There are a few things that I want to recap regarding this year.  I have to say that it was a pretty good year.  I feel like I have settled into my job.  I am starting to feel comfortable while still admitting that I have a TON to learn.  There has been quite a bit of turnover in the past few months and that requires everyone else to step up to help out.  I’m trying to do my part.  I have said this before, but I am so thrilled to have finally found a job that I love.  I really enjoy what I get to do for a living and I’m even more excited that I get to work with people I genuinely care about and with whom and genuinely enjoy spending time.  I am very lucky.

On the exercise front, 2015 was another challenging year.  The high point was clearly the Cellcom half marathon in May.  That was at a point when the injections were managing my pain and my training was going well.  It was difficult to accept that my times weren’t what they were a couple years ago.  I am still trying to wrap my head around the fact that my times may never be at that level again.  I am not ready to say that I will never run another marathon.  (In fact, I am going to apply to the NYC marathon again this year.)

Other than the half marathon, it was year full of running struggles.  I ran mostly 5Ks and mostly with Jaden.  They were mostly slow and painful.  I had a really good run at the Balloon Launch 5K, getting a very unexpected PR.  I was able to complete my very first triathlon in June.  That was challenging and exciting and I hope to be able to do more of them in the future.

I only managed about 690 running miles this year.  The chronic back injury and more recent piriformis issues slowed me down on several occasions over the last 12 months.  I biked about 273 miles and that would have been a lot more if it hadn’t been for the injury.  I had to stop biking in the middle of August, so I missed out on another 2 and half months of great biking weather.

One of the highlights of the year was starting tae kwon do with Jaden.  It has been a lot of fun to learn so much about martial arts and to challenge myself in a different way.  I like seeing what my body can do.  And, I’ve made some new friends too!  I hope that Jaden continues to want to do this with me.  And I am looking forward to getting Logan started in it in another year or so.

I prefer the word ‘goal’ to ‘resolution.’  So while everyone else is setting resolutions that may only last them a few weeks, I am going to look at some of the new goals that I want to achieve this year.

I have recently started doing yoga.  My cousin just started teaching locally and for some reason, it is less intimidating to go when I know the teacher.  I am really NOT good at it, but I am enjoying it.  I think that it is going to be really good for me to strengthen my core and hopefully decrease some of my back pain.

I really want to do another half marathon this year.  I have my eyes set on Cellcom again.  It is hard for me to sign up for anything early, because I never know what type of pain I will be in by the time the spring rolls around.  I don’t really feel comfortable setting any type of time goal, but completing it would feel good.

My lack of consistent exercise coupled with all the holiday goodies has led to some of my clothes being a bit tight.  I am trying to be a little more careful with what goes in my mouth and I hope to be back to what it says on my driver’s license by my birthday.

There are some other things I am thinking of for the upcoming year, but I feel like I need some more time to roll them around in my head before I throw them out there.  But I would love to hear what you are doing.  Give me some ideas, motivation, goals.  Have a great 2016!
